A Winding Road….

From school psychologist to systems thinker: How lived experience shaped my mission.

My path to coaching, functional medicine, and workplace wellness.

Hi! I’m Amy Schamberg.

School psychologist | Health & Wellness Coach | Total Worker Health specialist

Nice to meet you!

I’m Amy—a school psychologist, functional medicine health coach, and Total Worker Health specialist focused on burnout recovery and holistic well-being. I’m also a mom to two incredible boys, married to the love of my life, a first-generation college grad from a small town in Ohio, and a proud Colorado transplant of over 20 years.

I’m passionate about wellness—from hot yoga to holistic health—and true crime podcasts are my guilty pleasure when I need to decompress. I also find deep fulfillment in traveling with my family, especially to places where we can explore new cultures, practice new languages, and reconnect on the peaceful shores of a beach where the water is clear and time slows down.

“Love of Learning” is my top character strength—and the thread that connects everything I do.

I’ve earned three degrees and multiple certifications—not just to collect credentials, but because I’m genuinely driven to understand people, systems, and what it takes to support whole-person health from the inside out.

Perfectionism, People-Pleasing & the Search for Something More

Like many high-achieving women, I struggled with the pressure to succeed from a young age. I learned to internalize stress, ignore my needs, and chase perfection at all costs. I also experienced chronic health issues and underlying anxiety that left me feeling like something was always off—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Despite specialists, therapy, meds, and self-help rabbit holes, I kept hitting a wall. I felt like I was doing all the right things, yet nothing was working. Eventually, I decided to take a different approach.

That’s when I stopped outsourcing my well-being and started learning everything I could about how to truly heal, from the inside out.

Finding Functional Medicine

Discovering the world of functional medicine changed everything. For the first time, I understood how deeply connected our physical and mental health really are. By uncovering the root causes of my chronic stress and health challenges, I made intentional changes to my nutrition, mindset, and daily routines.

What started as a personal healing journey turned into a professional calling. I became a certified Functional Medicine Health Coach so I could help others uncover the same sense of clarity, relief, and empowerment.

Coaching Through Burnout & Building a Practice

As my coaching practice grew, I noticed a powerful theme: High-achievers and people-pleasers were burning out—just like I had. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I faced a major burnout episode that led me to step away from public education for the first time in my career.

In that pause, I started sharing my story more openly. Concepts like subtraction before addition and the 2% better rule resonated deeply with my clients. I began leading burnout recovery groups and speaking at summits, retreats, and wellness events—especially in the education world, where burnout was (and is) rampant.

That work began reaching beyond Colorado. I’ve had the opportunity to support coaching clients across the U.S. and Europe and to collaborate with professionals globally on workplace well-being.

Why Functional Medicine?

Western medicine is incredibly important, don’t get me wrong. From emergency care and surgical expertise, to infectious disease control and so much more, conventional medicine saves lives. I’m a firm believer in scientifically-based care and traditional psychology. But the pharmaceutical industry in the United States is also big business. That means the research tends to follow the money when it should be the other way around!

This has left gaps in the standard of care… Some of them are pretty big ones. For example, while conventional medicine does an awesome job of responding to advanced disease, it doesn’t always do a very good job of preventing it.

And we don’t talk often enough or seriously enough about the systems we live within. As a culture, we don’t acknowledge the impacts of our food systems or the way “busyness” has been sold to us as the thing we should all strive for. Productivity, side hustles, fad diets, caffeine to wake us up, and alcohol to wind us down…  Yikes. Talk about a recipe for disaster (and anxiety).

We’re not giving our bodies the chance to work the way they can and should. Functional medicine exists to fill that gap. It uses evidence-based strategies to bring the focus back to the overall, holistic wellness of the body we spend every single day in. Because treating that body well will give us the foundation we need to do whatever else it is we want to do with our time. And as a psychologist and functional medicine health coach, it’s my job to help you get there.

Coaching Helps You Prioritize Your Health Without Compromising Your Ambition.

  • Let go of people-pleasing patterns that lead to resentment, overwhelm, and burnout.

  • Build the skills to set and honor healthy boundaries—with yourself and with others.

  • Develop realistic, sustainable habits around nutrition and movement to support your long-term health goals.

  • Overcome sleep troubles, wake up feeling rested, and maintain your energy throughout the day.

  • Redefine success on your own terms—and start living with more ease, purpose, and joy.

Coaching puts you in the driver’s seat.

Whereas traditional therapy is heavily focused on processing past traumas or managing diagnoses, coaching is an action-based, goal-oriented approach that looks at the present and the future.

Through coaching, I’ll help you sort out the challenges of the here and now—identify your ideal future, get clear on your goals, and develop a success plan to make it happen. We’ll work in partnership to determine what it might look like for you to function optimally, and we’ll take steps to get you feeling healthier, happier, and more capable.

You’ll be better able to connect the dots between who you are and who you know you can be.

Coaching Traditional Therapy

Ready to Feel Like Yourself Again?

the work evolved: expanding my mission

From Coaching Individuals to Advancing Total Worker Health

Just as I once took ownership of my personal health, I eventually realized that personal wellness strategies alone weren’t enough—not for me, and not for the people I was trying to support. While my early work in burnout recovery focused on individual resilience, I began to feel increasingly uneasy about the systemic issues I couldn’t ignore—especially within schools and other high-stress workplaces.

I expanded my work to include wellness workshops on stress, resilience, and redefining self-care. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—but the stories I heard, especially from educators, often circled back to the same truth: We can’t self-care our way out of broken systems.

Burnout is NOT a Personal Failing

A powerful piece of feedback from a teacher crystallized it for me: “We need to reframe burnout as a systemic issue. Stop telling teachers how to recognize it—start changing the conditions that cause it.”

That insight hit hard—and it changed the direction of my work.

I began exploring workplace wellness frameworks through research, conversations, and coursework, and eventually enrolled in the Total Worker Health® Certificate Program at the Colorado School of Public Health. There, I learned that improving worker well-being starts with changing working conditions—not with asking individuals to do more. We spend over 30% of our lives at work. Burnout, chronic stress, and anxiety aren't individual failings—they're public health concerns.

Since completing the program, I’ve evolved my offerings beyond individual coaching. I now consult, train, and advise schools, nonprofits, and organizations that are ready to invest in systemic solutions. Whether it’s rethinking workload expectations, building psychologically safe environments, or implementing policies that support sustainable well-being, I work with leadership teams to design cultures where people can thrive.

Becoming a Doctoral Researcher & Global Advocate

Motivated by the systemic gaps I continued to witness, I have returned to school once again—this time to pursue a Doctorate in Occupational and Environmental Health. My research interests are on how organizational structures contribute to burnout, and how public health frameworks can be used to redesign work systems to better support health, safety, and sustainability—particularly in the education sector.

I’ve also stepped into an exciting new role as the host of the TAUGHT podcast, originally created to share stories of teacher burnout. Building on that foundation, I’m now shifting the focus to highlight systemic solutions, expert insights, and evidence-based interventions for workplace well-being. My goal is to translate what I learn through the podcast into applied research, meaningful advocacy and real-world impact.

where you’ll find me now

These days, I’m…

  • Supporting clients 1:1 as a wellness coach

  • Leading Burnout Recovery Groups for high-achieving professionals

  • Facilitating workshops on stress, mindset, resilience, and leadership.

  • Consulting with schools, nonprofits, and companies on Total Worker Health® strategies

  • Speaking at global events, including co-presenting at the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children (WCGTC) in Braga, Portuagal this July, where we’ll be leading a session on teacher wellness.

And of course, I’m still practicing what I preach- prioritizing my own well-being and finding joy in the little things, even amidst the big goals.

What’s Next

I believe work can be a place that supports—not sabotages—our health. I believe we need both systems change and personal agency to create sustainable well-being. And I believe healing is possible, even in high-stress environments.

If you’re curious about coaching, consulting, or collaborating, I’d love to hear from you.

In Summary…

Over the past 15 years, I’ve worked with thousands of individuals—children, teens, parents, educators, and executives—to navigate stress, overwhelm, and burnout. I help people get unstuck, shift their mindset, and build practical habits for long-term well-being.

Whether you’re an individual seeking support, a school or organization looking for a partner in wellness, or a fellow changemaker in this space—you’re welcome here.
