Play & Playfulness: Reconnecting With Joy

Fundamentals of Balanced Wellness: Part 7

Play is not a luxury—it’s a human need. Rediscover joy, creativity, and your identity beyond work and responsibility.

When was the last time you did something just because it made you smile?

Play and playfulness are often the first things to go when life feels busy or heavy—but they’re essential for creativity, resilience, and joy. In functional wellness, play is not optional. It’s part of what keeps us mentally flexible and emotionally well.

One of my favorite things to explore with clients is what lights you up—beyond productivity, roles, and performance. So often, people tell me they can’t even remember what they like to do for fun. That’s okay. Joy isn’t lost; it’s just buried under the noise. We start small. Maybe it’s painting, hiking, playing music, or getting silly with your kids. Whatever it is, we give it space—and permission to matter.

Reclaiming play is about remembering that you are a whole person—not just a worker, a caregiver, or a list of obligations. And when you reconnect with that part of yourself, everything else becomes just a little bit lighter.

In fact, research from the National Institute for Play (yes, it exists!) shows that engaging in play increases brain plasticity, improves our ability to adapt to stress, and fosters deep social connection (National Institute for Play). Play isn't just fun—it's fundamental to human flourishing.

Before we wrap up, take a moment to reflect: What might it look like to invite more play and playfulness into your life—without tying it to productivity or perfection? Whether it's laughter, movement, or creativity, even a little bit of joy can go a long way.

What’s one small thing you used to love doing—just for fun—that you could reintroduce into your life this week?
